The collapse of construction giant Carillion has brought the involvement of private contractors in providing public services under the spotlight.
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has savaged what he called the “outsourcing racket” exposed by the company’s collapse, vowing to tear up procurement rules to make the public sector the default choice for providing government services.
It’s a debate that many thought had been settled years ago – but, along with nationalisation and public ownership generally, it has now been revived, as the private sector finds itself in the dock.
