Facebook founder wants to eradicate all diseases with £2.3bn - not even one fifth of the NHS Scotland's annual budget

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg hit the headlines this week when he claimed he and his wife Priscilla Chan plan to donate $3 billion (£2.3bn) to research ways to cure all diseases via their Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

Delivering a lecture in San Francisco, Zuckerberg, estimated to be worth £42bn, said he wants to “cure, prevent or manage all disease” by the end of this century.

But, considering NHS Scotland had an operating budget of £12.1bn last year, we are asking if anyone thinks Zuckerberg is for real?

Does he really believe he can fund the cure to all diseases with a fraction of that cash or is this just the latest act of someone craving publicity to massage his own God complex?

Bill Gates, the Microsoft founder has donated $28 billion (£17.9) of his fortune to his and his wife Melinda's own charity, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. And that's just to try and eradicate ONE disease!

You can't compare this to the NHS as they are not spending a fifth of their annual budget on research. The money spent on research is actually very low. We spend more on dealing with issues than preventing them. I think Mark is a very clever man who recognises that we can't keep pulling people out the river, eventually we have to take a walk up and find out why they are falling in. Good luck to him and his wife!
