A Disorder for Everyone: exploring the culture of psychiatric diagnosis, creating changeA Disor
From 09:00 to 17:00 on 10th March 2017
The Melting Pot 5 Rose Street Edinburgh Edinburgh EH2 2PR
Booking is now open for this event in Edinburgh, supported by the Scottish Recovery Network, which will ‘explore the culture of psychiatric diagnosis, creating change.’
This one day event is for anyone with an interest in the current debates around mental health. The day will be facilitated by Dr Lucy Johnstone, a UK clinical psychologist, trainer, speaker and writer, and a long-standing critic of biomedical model psychiatry, psychotherapist Jo Watson and features Edinburgh based spoken word artist and activist Jo McFarlane.
Event organisers commented:
It is increasingly acknowledged, even within the mental health establishment, that categories like ‘schizophrenia’, ‘bipolar disorder’ and ‘personality disorder’ lack validity.
The false assumption that distress is best understood as disease can have very serious consequences for the individual, their identity, and their path to recovery. Lucy will present alternatives to diagnosis which can help clients to make sense of experiences of distress, however extreme, and which are based on working together to explore personal meaning. There will opportunities for debate and practice-based exercises.
The event takes place on Friday 10th March 2017 from 9.00am until 5.00pm in Edinburgh. Cost of places varies but there are also a number of free places available. For more information contact: [email protected]
All hours are valid CPD hours for BACP, UKCP, and BPS (CPD Certificates will be issued).
