Many organisations and charities have an obligation to make their staff aware of the UNCRC and Children’s rights in Scotland.

Participants will learn about the key provisions of the UNCRC and will participate in an activity designed to increase their awareness of Articles 1-42 of the UNCRC.

Changes under The Children and Young people (Scotland) Act 2014 such as the role of the Named Person and the GIRFEC approach will be covered as well as the Scottish Government’s commitment to children and young people prior to the 2014 Act as detailed in Children’s Charter.

It highlights organisations and initiatives that enable children to exercise their rights such as The Children’s Parliament and The Children’s Commissioner for Scotland and Together.

In conclusion participants will be asked to think about and discuss what they do in their role that supports children and young people to exercise their rights and what they might do differently in the future.

By the end of this course the learner will be able to:

Outline the key provisions and list the articles of United Nations Convention on the rights of the child

Analyse the significance of the Children & Young People (Scotland) Act 2014

Discuss key elements of the national approach to support the UNCRC including GIRFEC, Wellbeing and the role of the Named Person.

Identify other initiatives that allow children to exercise their rights as set out in the UNCRC

Identify how you can support children to exercise their rights under the UNCRC as part of your role.
