Scottish benefits are here! Social Security Scotland, a new agency of the Scottish Government, has started paying devolved benefits. This course focuses on the first Scottish benefits – carer’s allowance supplement, best start grant and funeral expense assistance. Aimed at advisers with a working knowledge of the benefits system, it explains how the new system is different from the familiar DWP approach. It also gives participants an update on the progress of devolution of other benefits to Scotland, and recent changes to other devolved powers most relevant to advisers supporting people with their benefits.
The course covers:
• Who is entitled to Scottish benefits
• Residence rules and how they apply to people moving between UK countries
• How to apply for Scottish benefits
• Challenging decisions
• Overpayments
• Dignity, respect and human rights - how social security principles should apply in practice
• Future plans
