The importance of the handling of endings well cannot be overestimated. Unless dealt with appropriately and positively there is the potential for undoing a lot of the good work achieved throughout a befriending relationship.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module participants will have:

• Discussed what the current situation in their service is, as regards their waiting list and how this makes them feel.
• Looked at how to work with and keep in contact with people who are on the waiting list.
• Explored strategies for managing waiting lists, including:

 reducing the numbers of referrals their service takes on
 creating more capacity to enable them to potentially work with more clients
 bringing existing matches to an end so new ones can be created

• Thought about why having a waiting list might be a good thing
• Looked at the different types of endings which occur within befriending services and thought about the characteristics of positive and negative endings
• Discussed in what circumstances their organisation would end a match or its involvement in it.
• Explored good practice in ending matches positively.

Previous participants have said-
• “This training gave me so much to think about, I’ll certainly be going back to my project and discussing it with my colleagues so we can change some of what we do”
• “This session’s really helped me to feel more relaxed (ie less panicked) about the situation with my waiting list”
• “I loved that the emphasis was on endings being a positive thing if they are managed well”
