Referendum must be a victory for social justice

Despite the no vote, new powers must be delivered to make Scotland a fairer place to live

New powers promised to the Scottish people must be used to address poverty and social justice.

That’s the view of the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) following the referendum rejection of independence.

SCVO chief executive Martin Sime said: “People haven’t voted for the status quo. They have voted for the additional powers promised by the three main Westminster parties.

“Decisions on how to use these powers and important decisions about the economy, health and social care are far too important to be left to the politicians who all too often fail to deliver on their promises. People must have a say.

“Tackling poverty and building a fairer Scotland are our top priorities. Now Westminster and the Scottish Government need to tell us how they’re going to help make that happen.

“Remarkably high turnout levels signal a reawakening of our democracy which we must nurture and use as a catalyst to make Scotland a more equal place to live.

“The momentum for change is with us and we need to grab it with both hands.”
