Young women aged 18-23 have until 30 May to get their application in for the once in a lifetime opportunity

Women aged 18–23 have until 30 May to apply to be mentored by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

The successful applicant will have at least four private meetings with the first minister throughout the experience, which will take place between June 2017 and March 2018.

She will also be given the chance for additional opportunities depending on her interests and will get the opportunity to work with the media.

Sturgeon announced plans to mentor a young woman last month as part of a partnership with youth charity Young Scot and called on women in leadership roles to follow her example. It is only now that further details have been released.

During the experience, Young Scot will work with the young woman to create additional activities and opportunities to expand her skills. These could be speaking engagements, attendance at board meetings or shadowing experiences to help her to develop your projects, ideas and leadership skills.

The charity will administer the application process and is asking young women to apply for the opportunity via its website by explaining why the opportunity will make a real difference to them.

Speaking about the opportunity the first minister said: “If we are serious about reducing gender inequality and creating the next generation of women leaders, it’s up to us as women to ensure this happens.

“Mentoring a young woman is a highly effective way to enhance her career chances – giving her the confidence and knowledge to strive for her ambitions.

“I repeat my challenge to women leaders in Scotland– if you know a young woman of great potential, become her mentor.

“Her success will be yours as well, and you will have both learned from the experience. That’s how it works.”

Louise Macdonald, chief executive of Young Scot, added: “To be mentored by the first minister is an incredible opportunity.

“We can’t wait to hear from amazing young women from across Scotland who have a passion for making the world a better place and will make the most of this unique chance to work alongside the FM.

“By supporting young women and showing them there are no limits, we can all help to improve equality in Scotland.”

Interested young women can apply via the Young Scot website.
