She will champion the experiences of Girlguiding’s 70,000 strong network of volunteers

Girlguiding has announced Mhairi Mackay as its new assistant chief guide, joining chief guide, Tracy Foster, and deputy, Sally Kettle.  

Mhairi, 29, will help steer the direction of all girls and young women in guiding.

She will also champion the experiences of Girlguiding’s 70,000 strong network of volunteers and give over 300,000 girls the best guiding experiences. 

Mhairi has been involved in guiding since the age of seven, when she became a Brownie at a unit in Midlothian. She now runs 1st Dalkeith Ranger unit, also in Midlothian, as she has for the past five years.    

Before the age of 30, Mhairi already has a raft of experience in rewarding positions in guiding and exemplifies how the organisation builds confidence and leadership skills for young women. She was involved in Girlguiding’s programme renewal task and finish group, which supported the design of the charity’s current programme in 2015.  

Mhairi was also a former lead volunteer for girl experience, and worked on a number of projects, including adventures at home, a series of free activities for members and leaders to be do at home during the Covid-19 pandemic.

She also worked on the recent Queen’s Guide award refresh, young leader offer development and youth participation work which ultimately resulted in the creation of Girlguiding’s youth steering group, Amplify.

I'm looking forward to bringing my knowledge and experience into this role and working with volunteers and young people to continue to provide life-changing experiences through Girlguiding” 

In her professional life, Mhairi works in project management for the NHS, with a focus on health and social care integration.
