Giving Tuesday 2023: One day to make a world of difference

The global event will take place on Tuesday, November 28.

The date for this year’s Giving Tuesday has been announced as organisers seek to inspire millions to give and celebrate generosity.

The global movement is taking place on November 28 for 2023, with charities, their partners and donors coming together to celebrate the positive impact giving has on our society.

Giving Tuesday is a day of global giving that started in 2012 as a way to inspire generosity. It has now become a global movement run in over 95 countries that encourages people to give, volunteer, collaborate, and celebrate giving in all its forms.

Celebrity participants for previous Giving Tuesday days include Stephen Fry, Sir Ian McKellen, Minnie Driver, Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga and Tom Daley.

Partners signed up to support and who have been part of previous Giving Tuesday campaigns include NatWest Group, BT, Samsung, the Cabinet Office, national newspapers, and household name charities such as Macmillan Cancer Support and Marie Curie.

Last year Giving Tuesday saw over £20million raised in the UK, $3.1billion donated in twenty-four hours in the U.S, with 37m adults participating by offering gifts of time, their voice, skills, and money.

A further 15m people gave their voices and 10m people volunteered.

Paula O’Neill, Giving Tuesday UK campaign lead at the Chartered Institute of Fundraising, said: “Giving Tuesday is more than just a giving day, it is a global generosity movement working with businesses, charities, and individuals to promote generosity and encourage people to make a difference.

“Anyone, anywhere, can get involved in their own way and give back in a way that’s meaningful to them.

“With the challenges that everyone has felt this year, Giving Tuesday is a great moment for us to come together to remember, share, and celebrate the causes we care about and the things we value.”

This year’s Giving Tuesday will focus on showcasing and celebrating the different ways that people are involved in charities.

As well as giving money, they can share stories on social media, talk to friends or family about something close to their heart, donate to a charity shop, volunteer their time, support a campaign, or fundraise themselves.

Giving Tuesday will be a platform where any individual or organisation can share their pride in all and everything that people do – together we will celebrate the UK’s generosity.

There is a complete toolkit with tips, templates, and social media assets for anyone to use to help plan and support their Giving Tuesday plans.

Charities Minister Stuart Andrew said: "There are over 150,000 charities in England and Wales doing vital work every single day - but the millions of people that support these charities through giving are just as important.

"Around two-thirds of people across the UK give to charity regularly in a whole host of different ways, and now more than ever these charities need support.

"Giving Tuesday is a fantastic initiative that makes a difference where it matters, so I am encouraging those who can to consider donating, fundraising or volunteering to support the causes they care most about."Organisations can sign up to be a Giving Tuesday partner to hear more about the campaign and access all the toolkits and assets at www.givingtuesday.org.uk.
