Mum urges Scots to join Race for Life

Lindsay Blake, who is fighting cancer for a second time, has firsthand experience of Cancer Research's work

A mum of two who is facing a fight against cancer for a second time has been chosen to lead the charge against the disease.

Lindsay Blake is urging Scots to sign up for the Race for Life, with events taking place from May.

The 45-year-old is being treated with palbociclib, a new drug for breast cancer which targets and blocks the proteins that help cancer cells to grow.

Cancer Research UK funded scientists played a leading role in the development of the drug which was approved for NHS use by the Scottish Medicines Consortium in November last year.

Now she is teaming up with her daughter Stephanie, 27, to launch Race for Life 2018 in Scotland, a series of 5K, 10K and Pretty Muddy 5K events across the country this spring for Cancer Research UK.

"It was a shock when I was told cancer was back,” said Blake.

"I looked at my husband then burst in to tears. But after a minute I just wanted to ask the doctors, what's next? What are my options? I have a great life with a family I love to the moon and back. I refuse to let cancer stop me. I'm so proud to support Race for Life for all those who have survived and all those who we've lost to cancer.

"I did my first Race for Life with my daughter Stephanie right after finishing cancer treatment (the first time) and we've taken part every year since. We've raised more than £9,000 over the years thanks to the generosity of friends and family. Their support keeps me feeling positive, even through the tough days."

This month, women are being offered 30% off entry fees for all Race for Life events in Scotland, so it's the perfect time to sign up.

Organisers are appealing for women and girls to stride out to beat cancer sooner with Scotland's first Race for Life 5ks of the year kicking off in Stirling and South Queensferry on 13 May, closely followed by events across the country from Fife to Falkirk, Dundee to Irvine.

Lisa Adams, Cancer Research UK spokeswoman in Scotland, said: "By signing up to Race for Life, women across Scotland can make a real difference in the fight against cancer. Money raised will help Cancer Research UK scientists and doctors find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease, helping save more lives.”
