This week is National Obesity Awareness Week. The National Obesity Forum has estimated that as much as 50% of the UK population could be obese by 2050 at a cost of £50bn a year. The forum is calling on society and government to treat obesity like smoking by introducing hard-hitting campaigns as a way to combat this. It also wants GPs to raise the issue with overweight patients. However, the causes of obesity are complex and the effectiveness of commonly used obesity measurements such as the Body Mass Index is widely questioned. So is it helpful to focus so much on the numbers appearing on the scales? Or are their more important health messages, such as healthy eating and taking regular exercise?
