Poll: should veganism be a protected belief, just like religion?

Cropvegans poll

A charity worker is taking his former employer to court in a case which will centre on whether veganism is a protected philosophical belief – just like religion.

Jordi Casamitjana says he was sacked by the League Against Cruel Sports (LACS) after disclosing it allegedly invested pension funds in firms involved in animal testing.

He says he was discriminated against he is a vegan, something the charity denies.

Instead, the league says he was fired for gross misconduct.

Casamitjana says he is an ‘ethical vegan’, as opposed to someone who practices veganism for health reasons, and therefore can’t engage with any practice which is harmful to animals.

Now a tribunal will rule on it in March, and decide whether veganism is a category which is protected in law, akin to religious belief.

This is why we’re asking: is veganism a philosophical belief, just like religion?

If people can have their belief of possible divine beings watching over us and giving guidance on how to lead better lives, I don't see why we wouldn't protect a belief of leading a better life because it is ethically the best choice for all animals on this planet?
