​Scotland get beaten by a spirited Indonesian side but still hopeful to progress in Homeless World Cup

Scotland are keeping their hopes alive of qualifying for the knock-out round of the Homeless World Cup after narrowly losing their third game to Indonesia 7-5.

It leaves the Scots on six points from three games having won both their previous matches against Korea and Norway with games against Northern Ireland and Hungary still to play.

The tournament, in Santiago, Chile, is being held in blistering heat and involves 63 street soccer teams from across the globe.

President and co-founder of the Homeless World Cup, Mel Young, said: “74 nations worldwide run year-long street soccer programmes positively affecting the lives of over 100,000 each year. Offering alternative lifestyles, from gangs, addictions and the crippling isolation of homelessness.

“The Homeless World Cup is a culmination of all that hard work and we have many success stories of our players’ progression routes out of poverty and their journey to rejoin society.

“With a staggering 80% of players returning to full time accommodation, education and employment after taking part in the Homeless World Cup, literally transformed by the experience of representing their nation.”

Street soccer games take 15 minutes. Teams made up of eight players with a maximum of four players per team on the pitch: three outfield players and one goalkeeper.

The tournament runs for eight days with the final taking place this Sunday 26 October.
