Up-market retailer and charity join forces to launch food collections for the needy

The Trussell Trust is joining up with up-market retailer Waitrose to set up permanent foodbank donation points in all its supermarkets.

The retailer will be collecting items at its stores from 10 November, after which it will launch a Christmas appeal.

It follows a similar drive last year which saw more than 130 tons of food donated to the Trussell Trust.

This year, the supermarket chain and the charity have created a list of festive favourites , including selection boxes and Christmas cakes, which they are asking people to donate to the needy.

Tina Varns, Waitrose’s community, sustainability and ethical sourcing manager, said: “Foodbanks across the country do an incredible job helping those who need it most.

“We’re delighted to be working with the Trussell Trust to help our customers support foodbanks throughout the year and particularly at this time of year.”

The trust’s Helen Franks said: “We are delighted Waitrose is helping the lives of so many.”

I visited my local Waitrose in Uckfield specifically intending to buy some items to give to the Food Bank collection. When I asked about this I was told that they didn't have anyone to run it. I reluctantly went to Tesco's instead! So much for Christmas spirit...

Went to our local Waitrose last week - Wallingford - and enquired where the Trussell Trust food collection point was. Told that no collections at the moment as Trussell's had indicated that they had too much stock that was "rotting" so no more collections at the moment. Is this true - the problen hasn't gone away as far as I know!
