Abandoned pooch captures heart of the nation

Outpouring of love - and donations - for dog abandoned at train station

It made for a pitiful sight: an adorable pedigree pooch, abandoned at Ayr railway station alongside a suitcase containing its meagre belongings – a bowl, a blanket, some dog food and a toy.

However it seems the plight of Kai, a two year old shar-pei, has captured the hearts of the nation with the Scottish SPCA saying they have never experienced such an outpouring of love as they have witnessed for the pitiful pooch.

So much so the rehoming centre in Glasgow says that in less than 24 hours we over £2,500 has been donated to contribute towards his well-being.

The animal charity hopes to rehome him in Scotland in around three or four weeks' time, once he has had surgery to his eyes which, wardens believe, may have been the reason he was abandoned.

Now a JustGiving page has been created after more people were eager to donate.

Senior animal care assistant Alan Grant, said: "We have been overwhelmed with the response from people around the world and would like to thank everyone who has made a contribution, offered Kai a new home or wished him well.

"The donation page was originally started so people could help pay for the operation Kai needs on his eyes and any additional funds will be used to help care for the many sick, injured and abandoned animals at our rescue centres across the country.

"We've never had a response quite like this before and it is wonderful to know there are so many kind-hearted animal lovers out there."

The charity said abandoning an animal is an offence under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006 and anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.
