Art school fire hits charity’s funds

Music charity Paragon has had to cancel an event for hundreds of people after the huge blaze in Glasgow

A music charity has lost out on thousands of pounds as a result of the devastating fire at Glasgow School of Art.

A blaze ripped through the historic building at the weekend for the second time in four years, with the damage caused estimated at hundreds of millions of pounds.

Nearby premises have also been affected and a large cordon remains in place, meaning that charity Paragon has had to cancel one of its key fundraising events.

Staff and volunteers have been unable to access the charity’s base at the Centre for Contemporary Arts and have taken the decision to cancel the Jamathon fundraiser, which was due to take place on Thursday 21 June.

"The Paragon team is still unable to enter its office in the CCA via Scott Street, which is vital for the emergency evacuation of wheelchair users,” a spokesperson said.

"Paragon’s partners in the disability support sector, including Glasgow Disability Alliance and Capability Scotland, were due to bring their members along, who are now sorely disappointed that the event has been cancelled.

"As a result of this terrible fire, the charity will incur losses of thousands of pounds, which will have a severe impact on their annual programme of events."

The event would have brought people with and without disabilities together to make music and dance all day through accessible and inclusive workshops, with hundreds of people invited to attend.

Paragon has now launched a crowdfunding campaign aimed at raising £2,000 to help make up for the lost funds. The spokesperson added it is hoped that Jamathon may be able to be hosted later in the year.

Fire officers are still working to calm the blaze – which spread to music venues Campus and the O2 ABC – with investigators unlikely to arrive on site until the middle of this week. Conservation experts will then decide whether the grade-A listed building can be salvaged.
