Homelessness charity launches app which allows you to scan a barcode to donate to it

The Big Issue Foundation has signed up to an app which allows people to donate to it using their smartphone.

Powa Technologies’ PowaTag app allows readers to scan a barcode published in the Big Issue magazine, on its website, direct mailing or email communication and select an amount to donate.

The app is increasingly being used by retailers to attract impulse buyers as it allows also users to make instant purchases from online stores and the foundation hopes it will boost the amount it raises from members of the public.

The Big Issue Foundation is trying to raise an extra £13,000 through its use to expand the number of people it employs to look after is Big Issue sellers.

Currently, each Big Issue Foundation service broker looks after an average case load of 157 people.

Facilitating this impulse to donate, and providing the freedom to give as much as you like, can be the difference between acquiring a new donor and not

“The PowaTag technology has huge potential to help people support the vital work of charities like the Big Issue Foundation,” Dan Wagner, chief executive and founder of Powa Technologies, said.

“Sixty-six per cent of adults in the UK now own a smartphone and PowaTag gives charities a new and innovative way to connect to these millions of people.

“Many people often feel an urge to donate when they see a heart-warming advert and PowaTag gives potential donors a quick and easy solution to act on this impulse.

“Facilitating this impulse to donate, and providing the freedom to give as much as you like, can be the difference between acquiring a new donor and not.”

The Big Issue Foundation is not the first charity to link up with PowaTechnologies.

In May, Christian Aid raised thousands using the PowaTag app to create the world’s first interactive television campaign.

Viewers were able to donate to the charity simply by activating the app on their phone and selecting a donation amount, while the advert appeared on TV.

In the Big Issue Foundation's case, people will be able to select a donation amount after scanning a special barcode which will appear in the magazine, online and on all its email and marketing text.

The app saves users payment details on sign-up meaning it only takes seconds to donate and 100% of the donation is sent immediately to the charity.

To sign up to donate to the Big Issue Foundation using PowaTag, download the app from the iTunes or Google Play store and then visit the Big Issue donation page.
