The Mungo Foundation has received accreditation from the Soil Association for providing fresh and healthy food

A charity has been praised for its work in providing fresh and healthy food.

A number of services run by The Mungo Foundation have achieved a Food for Life Served Here Bronze accreditation from the Soil Association.

The services are among the first care homes in Scotland to receive the award, designed to recognise caterers who are serving fresh, local, honest meals.

In order to achieve accreditation, champions within each service engaged in wide-ranging reviews of their menu options; including a commitment to sourcing local produce, only using responsibly-sourced meat and fish, and producing at least 75% of food served onsite from scratch.

Catering staff worked with the residents to ensure that their favourite meals could still be served. As a result family and friends can rest assured that residents will receive a healthy and nutritious diet that also benefits the environment and the local economy.

The Bankhall Court service, which supports residents with dementia, went beyond expectations, freshly preparing 95% of food served onsite.

Rob, the head chef at Bankhall Court stated: “It’s meant a lot to the team and residents - we would love to stand out from all other services and achieve the silver award within the next 12 months. It’s important to provide our residents with a good nutritionally balanced diet in line with the Soil Association standards.”

The services that received the bronze accreditation are: Bankhall Court, McNeil Street Project, Moffat Street Project and the Mitre House Project.

Amy Lees, regional manager for The Mungo Foundation, said: “This award has been a fantastic opportunity for The Mungo Foundation to review our menus and consider the New National Care Standards. Projects have reviewed suppliers and product choices and as a result have moved to purchasing from local suppliers. Teams across different projects have enjoyed working together to share menus and good practice.”
