Alzheimer Scotland gets cash windfall from supermarket partnership

A partnership between Scotmid Co-operative and Alzheimer Scotland has resulted in £120,000 being raised for the charity in just six months.

Over the last six months, Scotmid Co-operative staff, members and customers have been busy challenging dementia by taking part in a variety of quirky fundraising activities including sponsored head shaves, extreme haircuts, fancy dress days, race nights, coffee mornings and store raffles.

All proceeds are going towards funding specialist dementia advisors as well as supporting a wide range of community initiatives such as a Dementia Cafes project – where many of those supported by the charities can go and socialise together.

A celebration marking the six-month anniversary of the partnership was put on at East Calder Dementia Café (pictured above).

Aileen Eland, practice team leader, Alzheimer Scotland Edinburgh and West Lothian Services, said: “I am delighted that Scotmid Co-operative chose to celebrate their half year milestone with the volunteers and residents from our East Calder Dementia Café.

“The dementia café offers a real lifeline to residents, offering a meeting place to talk about dementia and enjoy a cup of tea and cake.”
