​Young Scot has teamed up with SP Energy Networks to help youngsters pursue a career in engineering

Do you know who to call in the event of a power cut?

A survey carried out by a national youth organisation has discovered only one in 10 young people would know to contact their energy supplier.

Young Scot polled 300 young people to mark the launch of a new partnership with SP Energy Networks.

We hope that some of these Young Scots will be inspired to think about a career in energy

The pair have teamed up to showcase careers in engineering to young people and to offer support to those wishing to pursue one.

As part of the deal, Young Scot is promoting the SP Energy Networks' apprenticeship scheme and already, five Young Scot Rewards users have been treated to a trip to the company's training centre at Dealain House.

There they were given the opportunity to work with experts across construction, operation and maintenance of power distribution networks before going on to have site tour at Whitelee Wind Farm, the UK's largest onshore windfarm.

Louise Macdonald, chief executive of Young Scot, said: “We’re delighted to partner with SP Energy Networks to offer young people the opportunity to learn more about a career in engineering.

“The beauty of our Young Scot Rewards initiative is that it gives young people the chance to experience something different and the trip from Forth Valley College to Dealain House and Whitelee Wind Farm did exactly that.”

Guy Jefferson, director of distribution at SP Energy Networks, added: “It’s an important part of our job at SP Energy Networks to develop new talent through our apprenticeship schemes and graduate programmes, and we hope that some of these Young Scots will be inspired to think about a career in energy.”
