One Parent Families Scotland has launched its Twelve Weans of Christmas Appeal

A drive is being made to ensure single parent families can enjoy Christmas.

One Parent Families Scotland (OPFS) has launched its Twelve Weans of Christmas Appeal, which aims to ensure that all children is single parent families have access to toys, food and warm clothing.

The annual campaign – which supported 300 families last year – has received the backing of Scottish comedian Elaine C Smith.

“No child should have to go without this Christmas,” she said. “Sadly, some children won’t get any presents on Christmas Day because their family is facing a difficult time, that’s why I’m supporting this important appeal to try and help.

“I know the campaign has been running for several years and is an incredible success. People have been very generous, and I urge those who can afford it to contribute this year.”

The charity is looking for donations of toys and warm clothing for those aged up to 16 years, and will distribute food parcels over the festive period.

Satwat Rehman, OPFS director, said: “The festive season is a great time for families to celebrate and have extra time together, but it is also one of the most expensive times of year and can cause additional stress and anxiety for many single parents.

“Christmas can be really hard for some single parents who can’t afford to buy presents for their children. When parents call our telephone helpline around the Christmas period they often feel stressed about how they can afford even the basics.”

The charity is aiming to distribute donations during the week beginning 11 December.
