Anna Roots died following a collision with a lorry in the Scottish Highlands on Saturday

A charity cyclist who died in a collision with a lorry on the A836 at Bettyhill in Sutherland has had almost £20,000 raised in her honour.

Anna Roots, 34, from London was on the first day of a 12-day cycle from John O’Groats to Land's End on Saturday with her friend Rebekah Edgar when the incident took place at around 3.15pm.

The pair, who have both rowed for England, were raising funds for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.

Ian, Anna's husband, has asked me to update this page to share pictures of that day, which show Anna enjoying life as she always did

They hoped to raise £4,950 for the charity but donations have since rocketed to over £17,000 following news of Anna’s death.

Speaking on their JustGiving webpage Rebekah thanked friends for their continued support and asked people to keep donating.

She said: “We had been planning the ride for over a year, and were riding in aid of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research in memory of Vicky Mustoe.

“The first planned day of our ride took us along the scenic north coast of Scotland to a village called Bettyhill. Tragically as we descended into the village that afternoon Anna was involved in a fatal collision with a lorry.

“Ian, Anna's husband, has asked me to update this page to share pictures of that day, which show Anna enjoying life as she always did.

“He asks that flowers are not sent, but where people wish to make donations they are made to this fundraising page.”

Tributes have poured into the page from those who knew Anna as well as those who did not.

Barry Thomas said: “I met the lovely Anna on a couple of group training rides during July and we discussed her big charity adventure as we climbed Box Hill. Thoughts with all her friends and family, such sad news.”

Ruth Easterbrook said: “I never met Anna, but am so sad to hear of such a tragic accident when you were both trying to do such a good thing! Having completed Land's End to John O'Groats myself this is close to my heart, thoughts are with you xx.”
