Supporters urged to sign up to help children's charities in Scotland

Dundee charities are urging the public to give their support to the latest Kiltwalk.

St Andrews to Dundee Kiltwalk takes place on 20 August and charities gathered at Monifieth beach ahead of the launch to urge supporters to get behind the fundraiser.

Enable Scotland, Cornerstone, Dundee Blind & Partially Sighted Society, Street Soccer, Advocating Together (Dundee) SCIO, Dundee United Community Trust and The Institute of Cardiovascular Research enjoyed sun, sea and sand in Monifieth, where the third Kiltwalk of the year will finish.

Joining the charity representatives was Dundee United living legend Paul Hegarty who took part in a friendly kick-about by the seaside.

Hegarty urged individuals and businesses across Dundee and Tayside to sign-up and get walking. He said: “The Royal Bank of Scotland Kiltwalk is a brilliant day, and the Dundee route could be the most picturesque of 2017.

"It’s the perfect opportunity to lace up your walking boots and raise money for charities close to your heart while having fun alongside other kind-hearted folk.”

The ‘Big Stroll’ (11 miles) and ‘Wee Wander’ (6 miles) take place on the same day as the 25-mile ‘Mighty Stride’, meaning people of all ages and abilities can take part. The Mighty Stride sets off at 9am from the world famous Old Course in St Andrews before heading onto the Fife Coastal Path. The route takes in iconic landmarks such as the Tay Bridge and Broughty Castle, allowing for some picture-perfect moments.

For every pound raised, £1.40 will go to charity. This comes after Sir Tom Hunter and The Hunter Foundation generously pledged that 140% of all fundraising at each of the four 2017 Royal Bank of Scotland Kiltwalk events will go to charity.

Paul Cooney, chief executive of the Kiltwalk said: “We are thrilled to bring the Kiltwalk to Dundee. Our ambition is to turn the Royal Bank of Scotland Kiltwalk into Scotland’s largest mass participation event, so we’re asking Dundonians of all ages to sign up and get involved.

“With the Dundee Kiltwalk just over a month away it’s the perfect time to start training. The Kiltwalk is the ideal way to make a real and lasting difference to charity whilst getting fit and having fun at the same time. The sense of accomplishment you feel when crossing the finishing line is something else.”

Kiltwalk has raised more than £3.5 million for Scottish charitable causes since 2011. The first Royal Bank of Scotland Kiltwalk 2017 took place in Glasgow on April 30, whilst the second took place in Aberdeen on June 4, the remaining dates are: Dundee (August 20) and Edinburgh (September 17).
