Homeless World Cup fever is building as Scots teams try on their strips

Players selected to represent Scotland at the forthcoming Homeless World Cup tournament in Glasgow next month have worn their new team strip for the first time.

Craig McManus (40), Connor Henderson (21), Karen Boggie (34) and Stephanie Tweed (21) were chosen, along with eleven others, to play for Scotland at the international tournament being held in Glasgow’s George Square between the 10th and 16th July.

The players, all participants in the Street Soccer Scotland programme, were selected for the men’s and women’s teams following trials held across Scotland in recent months.

Ally Dawson, Team Scotland manager, said: “The excitement is building for everyone involved in the tournament and putting on the official Scotland team strip for the first time lifts that excitement even higher. Every player is looking forward to playing in front of a noisy and supportive home crowd.”

Founded in 2009 by David Duke, who was once homeless, it is now a leading sport for social change organisation with support from Sir Alex Ferguson.

Scotland’s Homeless World Cup men’s team lifted the trophy for the first time in Denmark in 2007 and again in Paris in 2011.

Scotland’s women’s team finished fifth in Paris in 2011 and seventh last year in Amsterdam.
