​Julie Webster has pleaded not guilty

The founder of a prominent foodbank is to stand trial accused of embezzling money from it.

Julie Webster is charged with taking £15,000 from now defunct Greater Maryhill foodbank between March and December 2015, while she worked at the Chapel Street centre as a coordinator.

The 41-year-old from Summerston pleaded not guilty by letter when the case was called at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

A trial has been set for June.

Maryhill Foodbank claimed to have provided emergency food for almost 30,000 people since it opened in January 2013.

For many, the foodbank became totemic and came to symbolise Glasgow’s response to austerity and it gained the backing of celebrities such as Frankie Boyle and Kevin Bridges.

It closed its doors on 25 March 2016.
