Supermarket giant wants to donate money from mandatory carrier bag charge to be introduced in October

Scottish charities have until next month to submit a proposal to become partners with a major supermarket which could see them net more than £1 million.

Tesco is searching for a charity to link up with for a 12-month period to distribute the proceeds of carrier bag mandatory charges which are to be introduced in Scotland in October.

Tesco’s community director Greg Sage said: “This is a great opportunity for us to work with a charity in Scotland to use the bag levy charge to support local communities.

"Consideration will be given to any registered UK charity that delivers national environmental projects, local community initiatives or projects that encourage sustainable living around issues such as environment, food or health.

“This bag levy fund will come directly from our customers so we feel strongly that the projects funded by the donations should benefit as many people as possible across the country.”

Charities wishing to apply have to email a statement to Tesco, in no more than two pages, outlining the work of the organisation and give details of any specific projects it would aim to address with around £1m.

The closing date is 5pm on 11 July.
