PC Andrew Harper, who was killed last week, had planned to undertake a gruelling challenge for charity.

A fundraiser set up by a policeman who died while investigating an alleged burglary has reached £25,000.

PC Andrew Harper was killed last week while responding to an incident in Sulhamstead, Berkshire.

Prior to his death, the 28-year-old had planned to undertake a gruelling 20-mile obstacle course in aid of Children with Cancer UK.

Donations have flooded in over the past few days, and on Tuesday the total amount raised was £25,043 – more than 5000% the original target of £500.

Taking Gift Aid into account, it means PC Harper will have posthumously raised over £30,000 for the charity, which offers advice and support to young people with cancer and their families.

In a statement on his fundraising page, PC Harper wrote: “Nobody deserves to experience the devastating impacts of cancer, but especially not children.

“Through funding vital specialist research, Children with Cancer UK give children the best chance to survive. They help drive up childhood cancer survival rates and find kinder, more effective treatments to reduce long-term side effects. This ground breaking research saves children's lives and would otherwise go unfunded.

“Personally I have never been much of a runner - the longest I've ever done to date being 10K however I have decided to run this 20 mile, 200 obstacle course route to try and help save the lives of children with cancer and keep families together. Even if only one child benefits then it will be well and truly worth it.

“Wherever possible, please support me in this goal and help us fight for those who can't fight for themselves.”

Ten people have been arrested in connection with PC Harper’s death, with a 20-year-old man charged with his murder in court on Tuesday.

In a statement, PC Harper’s wife Lissie said: “My darling boy I do not know how I will be able to survive without you.

"Although we were married for only 28 days before you were cruelly taken away from me, my husband you were perfect."
