The funeral of charity workers Jim and Ann McQuire will take place on Friday

The funeral of dedicated charity workers Jim and Ann McQuire who were killed in the Tunisian tragedy is to take place on Friday afternoon (10 July) in the Church of Scotland’s Abronhill church, Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire.

The couple were among 38 people shot in a terrorist attack on June 26.

Mourners will gather to pay their respects to the couple who were devoted members of the church and also served their community well.

There have been messages from people who knew Ann and Jim, and from many who didn’t

Ann sang and played guitar in the church and Jim volunteered as captain of the 5th Cumbernauld Boys Brigade company for many years.

The newly retired couple also did charity work in Glasgow’s east end, where they originally hail from.

The church minister Rev Joyce Keyes has expressed thanks for expressions of support which have flooded in.

She said: “The church has been inundated with messages and expressions of support, in the form of flowers, cards, emails, prayers and words of comfort both for the McQuire family and for the church community.

“There have been messages from people who knew Ann and Jim, and from many who didn’t, even from a BB company in England.

“The church was full last Friday when we opened it for prayer and reflection, and to allow people to observe the nationwide minute’s silence together.

“During the gathering the local congregation and community were joined by the local RC Priest, Father Joe McAuley, the Moderator of Falkirk Presbytery George McDonald and minister of Condorrat Parish Church Rev Grace Saunders.

“There was also a significant BB representation, as well as neighbours and former work colleagues.”

A book of condolence was opened on Friday which has already been signed by hundreds of people, and it will remain available at least until after the funeral service next Friday.

The service begins at 2pm.
