Giving Tuesday set to be ‘biggest and best yet’

The annual fundraising event takes place on Tuesday 29 November.

Organisers say this year’s #givingtuesday will be the “biggest and best” yet as it emerged hundreds of charities have signed up to the global day of giving.

The annual event, being held in the UK for the third time, takes place on Tuesday 29 November and calls on people to ‘”do good stuff” for charities.

This could include donating money, volunteering time or doing something to promote a favourite cause, organisers said.

Last year’s #givingtuesday set a new Guinness World Record for money donated online in 24 hours with £6,000 per minute donated to UK charities.

Just like Black Friday, #givingtuesday has now established itself as a regular feature in the festive calendar in the UK

Celebrities including Emma Watson, Gary Lineker and Stephen Fry backed the campaign, which raised a global total of £35m.

In Scotland one of the biggest highlights was Project Scotland’s inventive donations appeal.

The charity's chief executive Paul Reddish donned a pink tutu and raised over £1000 by releasing videos of him dancing to popular songs for donations.

This year's event is taking place in more than 70 countries worldwide and is led by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) in the UK.

Charities including Sue Ryder, Cancer Research UK, Africat and Rethink Mental Illness have all signed on to support it.

Kim Roberts, CAF’s senior campaigns officer, said: “It is fantastic that so many charities large and small have signed up to be part of #givingtuesday.

“We would like to encourage as many charities as possible to become partners so we can all work together to make #givingtuesday 2016 the biggest and best yet.

“Just like Black Friday, #givingtuesday has now established itself as a regular feature in the festive calendar in the UK. For charities this can be a great opportunity to showcase what they do, encourage more engagement with their work and thank people for their support.”
