Foodbanks are suffering as demand rises and donations dry up

Another foodbank is running out of supplies.

Drumchapel Foodbank in Glasgow said it is currently experiencing its worst food shortage this year.

Its Facebook page said: “As many of you know we are a purely independent food bank, meaning we receive absolutely no government/council funding. We were founded from the community, we remain sustained by the community, and most importantly, we work for the community.

“Due to a severe lack of donations and a ever growing rise in usage we are struggling every week to provide the same high standard of service we have upheld ever since our doors first opened.”

It added that it was making a plea to all partners and the local community to donate what they can.

“It'll be a cold day in the hell the day we close these doors, but at the moment that day we fear is forever drawing closer,” said the statement.

It follows news that Edinburgh North Foodbank’s supplies have dried up – one of the capital’s biggest emergency food suppliers.

Its operations manager Bethany Biggar said: “Until we have a benefits systems that’s caring, compassionate and supportive, a minimum wage covering the essentials, and a workforce that is reliable and secure, we will continue to support those who need us. We will not allow people in Edinburgh to starve.”
