Clara Govier has been promoted to managing director at the Edinburgh-based People's Postcode Lottery

Clara Govier has been appointed managing director of the People's Postcode Lottery - and immediately urged politicians to update the law on society lotteries to help more charities.

Govier, who was previously head of charities at the Edinburgh-headquartered organisation, said the People’s Postcode Lottery has the potential to raise far more for charity if out-dated laws designed to protect the national lottery are scrapped.

"For years now People's Postcode Lottery has been calling on the government to raise the annual fundraising limit on society lotteries to £100 million and the single draw limit to £10m,” she said. “By making these simple changes to the law more can be raised for charity at no cost to government or the taxpayer."

Govier takes on the role of managing director following the departure of Jo Bucci. Her responsibilities will include politics and licence, charities, communications, finance as well as overseeing HR and events.

Govier has extensive experience spanning the communications and charity sectors. Before joining the People's Postcode Lottery in 2010, she held senior media relations roles at Scottish Wildlife Trust, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland.

She added: "I am thrilled and honoured to be appointed managing director.

"I'm proud to have been part of a brilliant and dedicated young team for eight years and now I look forward to playing an even greater role. Our business has so many exciting milestones coming up over the next few months."

Annemiek Hoogenboom, country director for People's Postcode Lottery, said: “Clara has been a stand out member of our senior team for many years, helping to lead the business through a period of significant growth, particularly in the amount of funds our players have raised for good causes. I am excited that she has agreed to take on the role of managing director.”

Laura Chow, who joined People's Postcode Lottery in 2016, has been promoted to head of charities.

Chow came from the Royal Bank of Scotland where she was a senior community programmes manager in its sustainability team.

Lorna Menzies will continue in her role as managing director leading the marketing department, TV and customer experience, and will also take on responsibility for data services.

The players of People's Postcode Lottery, which now employs 300 staff at its Charlotte Square headquarters, have given more than £300 million to good causes since it launched in 2005.
