Organisers “stand together” with French team competing at Gasgow tournament

Organisers of the Homeless World Cup have paid tribute to those who lost their life in the terrorist attack in Nice last night.

France has a women’s team in the tournament which is currently being held in Glasgow’s George Square.

Due to the pre-arranged fixture schedule the team, which is managed by Collectif EN JEU, a group of organisations that manage sports events and cultural programmes for disadvantaged people all over France, isn’t due to play today.

Mel Young, co-founder of the Homeless World Cup Foundation, said: “We’re devastated at this loss of life, and for the people of France – and every country – affected by this atrocity.

“We stand together with our friends from Team France today, shoulder to shoulder, providing all the support they need.

“As we so often say, the Homeless World Cup is about triumph over adversity, and that will remain the case.”

It has been confirmed that 84 people, including 10 children, lost their life when a lorry was deliberately driven at a crowd of people gathered on Promenade de Anglais while watching a firework display to celebrate Bastille Day.
