Police Scotland has launched a new campaign and is working with Stop It Now!

Those who carry out online sexual abuse are being warned that there is no hiding place.

Police Scotland has revealed that one in four sex abusers commit their crimes online.

The #NotMyFriend campaign has been launched after Childline reported that there has been a 250% increase in calls from young people about online abuse.

The campaign warns abusers of the life-changing consequences of their actions, making it clear they will have a lasting impact on not only their victims but also on their families and themselves.

The police are working with Stop It Now! – a charity service which aims to prevent people from looking at inappropriate images of children.

Assistant Chief Constable Gillian MacDonald said that those who target children online will be found and arrested.

"Our message is an extremely strong and powerful one absolutely aimed at perpetrators,” she said.

"They often feel anonymous and invisible operating online because they will often be in their own home, having created a fake profile, and they think police won't be able to identify who they are and where they are.

"That's absolutely wrong. We have skilled investigators who operate in the online environment and are very skilled at identifying perpetrators who are seeking to target children.”
