Charities and community groups can get grants of up to £20,000 that help to raise resilience and capacity at a local level

People’s Postcode Lottery is celebrating Christmas with the landmark of having supported over 5,500 grassroots good causes around the UK.

Its three community programmes trusts - People’s Postcode Trust, Postcode Community Trust and Postcode Local Trust - provide charities and community groups with grants of up to £20,000 that help to raise resilience and capacity at a local level.

This year, over 1,500 causes were supported throughout with grants from the trusts, totalling over £7.5 million.

With the organisation’s focus on postcodes and communities, the trusts fund projects that will help the groups to make a real difference in their local area and those that can make a big impact with a relatively small amount of money.

Equitots Lanarkshire is one such group. It received a £2,000 grant this year from People’s Postcode Trust to deliver a program of outdoor learning with a difference.

Working with local schools, the project identified children experiencing disadvantage and those who require an alternative approach to learning.

Equitots used activities that pupils would not normally have access to such as horse riding and forest activities to improve numeracy and literacy skills.

Having completed the project, schools reported that children were more focused, able to listen and participate and had overall improved their communication and confidence.

Laura Chow, head of charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said: “We are thrilled to have reached so many communities this year, and to have supported over 5,500 groups since the trusts began.

"We see time and time again that a relatively small grant can make a massive difference to the people in the local area. Local charities and groups know what the area really needs, and it is inspiring to see the huge number of innovative, locally-led solutions to the many challenges communities are facing.”

A minimum of 32% from every People’s Postcode Lottery ticket goes directly to good causes. To date, players of People’s Postcode Lottery have raised over £371m for good causes across Great Britain and internationally.

People’s Postcode Trust, Postcode Community Trust, and Postcode Local Trust will be open again for applications in February 2019.
