Child Protection Committees Scotland has launched a new campaign which aims to help the public spot neglect

Members of the public are being encouraged to keep their Eyes Open for children at risk during the school holidays.

In the week that Scotland’s schools sound the end of term bell, Child Protection Committees Scotland is encouraging the public to be extra observant to help protect potentially vulnerable children when school’s out for summer.

The nation-wide grouping of child protection professionals has launched the Eyes Open campaign – which will raise awareness that people can play an important role to keep children safe from harm in the holidays.

CPCScotland chair Anne Houston said that everyone has a responsibility to help keep children out of harm.

She said: “Scotland’s children are about to be away from the usual school routine for a few weeks. For most children this is a time of year filled with fun and free time, but for some families the summer holidays is a time of increased stress and pressure. In some cases, children are not supervised or cared for adequately, others might even experience serious neglect.”

By taking an Eyes Open approach, CPCScotland hope that members of the public will take a more active, watchful role when it comes to protecting children, and take action if they’re concerned for a child.

The campaign has also received backing from the Scottish Government.

Early years minister Maree Todd said: “For most children the summer holidays are a time for fun and a hard-earned break from school, but for some this period can bring an increased risk of harm, neglect, and disruption. We all have a part to play in protecting children and keeping them safe from harm. I urge everyone to take an Eyes Open approach this summer and report anything you feel may put a child at risk.”
