Social care charity asks supporters to fund a day out for a disadvantaged youngster

A leading social care charity has launched its 2015 summer fundraising drive and hopes to provide a day to remember for 900 children.

The Quarriers appeal, which can fund a young person on a day out for just £10, asks supporters to make a donation to help give vulnerable children memories to last a lifetime.

This year’s campaign will help fund outings, ice creams and seaside trips for young people, supported by Quarriers, who might not have had the opportunity to enjoy such excursions otherwise.

Those who will benefit from the campaign will include young carers, children living in poverty, youngsters with disabilities and young people who require residential support.

Offering a carefree day and a break from daily struggles, the appeal will provide lasting memories for children and young people supported by Quarriers services in Glasgow, East Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire, Inverclyde, Ayrshire, Falkirk, Dumfries and Galloway, Aberdeenshire and Moray.

We were unbelievably grateful for the response to last year’s appeal and we hope to have an even bigger impact this year

To launch its 2015 summer appeal, Quarriers enlisted the support of several youngsters for a special book event in Glasgow where the children enjoyed a host of summer stories from nostalgic Ladybird books (pictured above).

Renowned children’s publisher, Penguin Random House, has donated the books and associated imagery for the charity to use as part of the campaign.

Fiona Nicolson, head of children and young people’s services, said: “We were unbelievably grateful for the response to last year’s appeal and we’re hoping to have an even bigger impact this year.

“For many of us, days out during the holidays were a regular occurrence and looking back, most of us will have taken them for granted.

“The financial strain on some families, particularly during the summer, can mean a simple trip to the seaside is beyond their means and that’s why our summer appeal is one of our most important campaigns as it offers children something special.

“A day out may seem like a trivial pleasure for most people, but for some of those we support, it can be a memorable experience, where they can make new friends, feel supported and create their own summer stories to tell at school.

“As a charity, Quarriers aims to help young people reach their full potential and we’re keen to use the Summer Appeal to support that and make this summer as special for as many children as possible.”

As well as days out, and with the help of supporters’ generous contributions to the appeal, Quarriers offers young people long-term guidance, giving them the right support at the right time – something that can transform lives.

The charity provides mentoring and life coaching, support groups, activities and befriending services which help children build their confidence, keep up their education, make friends who understand what they are going through and have an all-round brighter view of their future.

A gift of £10 will provide one child with a day out, and gifts of any amount are welcome. Supporters can make a contribution easily by visitingwww.quarriers.org.uk/summer.
