Former bank worker purports to be chief executive of organisation that supports charities

A bank worker who is also chief executive of an organisation claiming to support charities has been found guilty of stealing £10,000.

Scott Barclay stole the cash from his employer, TSB Scotland, although quickly returned it after being questioned.

Barclay, who hit headlines in 2014 for taking part in Scotland’s first same-sex wedding, was caught red-handed by the St Vincent Street, Glasgow, bank’s CCTV but claimed he was embroiled in a bizarre blackmail plot.

The first offender was sentenced to 250 hours of unpaid work after appearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Friday (2 February).

He is the chief esecutive of Big Impact Scotland, which claims to support charities and community groups.

Its website states: “Through our events and fundraising initiatives, you can play an active part in helping us to raise as much money as possible to provide tangible support via project and restricted funding.

“Charities and not-for-profit organisations can apply for funding for specific projects throughout the year, which will then be reviewed by our grants committee for consideration.”

Barclay's LinkedIn profile claims he swam the channel between Britian and France – evading a shark in the process.

Big Impact Scotland is linked with the Icon Awards, which is run by Warren Paul, who TFN exposed in 2015 over allegations of homophobic bullying.

Barclay chairs the Icon Awards despite it being known that Paul was previously rebuked by an industrial tribunal for systematically bullying a gay employee of his CP Publishing firm.

As a result Paul was ordered to pay his victim what was then the biggest pay out of its kind in the UK – £118,000.

At the time the tribunal chairman said: "The conduct of the respondent was high-handed, malicious, insulting and oppressive.”

A TSB spokesman said: “Each and every TSB partner has a responsibility to look after our customers’ money and ensure they deliver the best possible customer service.

“When an employee falls short of that, we take appropriate action.”
