Former racing driver Dario Franchitti got back behind the wheel as a volunteer driver for an Edinburgh homeless charity

Former Scottish racing driver Dario Franchitti got behind the wheel again in Edinburgh recently.

Four-time IndyCar champion Franchitti showed his support for homeless charity Bethany Christian Trust by volunteering as a driver of the Bethany Christian Trust’s Care Van.

Homeless people in Edinburgh were served hot drinks and food from Dario and his wife Eleanor, who were supporting the service for those who are rough sleeping or living in temporary acccommodation.

The van goes around Edinburgh 363 days a year but demand for food and drink and warm clothing increases during the winter months.

Dario was also encouraging Edinburgh residents to follow his lead and donate the cost of a coffee and a sandwich towards the running of the shelter.

He said: “It’s distressing to see people having to live on the streets. Like many, I am fortunate enough to have a roof over my head.

"I am delighted to be supporting Bethany Christian Trust’s lifeline services and would encourage people to give as generously as they can towards the cost of the Winter Care Shelter.”

The charity also recently opened its Winter Care Shelter, which will run until April and provides beds for up to 45 people in different premises across the city and up to 60 during the busiest months.

People can donate to the charity's winter services by texting Home to 70300 with the amount they would like to give or they can visit www.bethanychristiantrust.com
