A record £539 million was paid out by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) to charities last year, breaking the half billion pound barrier for the first time.

According to the charity’s annual report, the level of giving by people and companies through CAF rose for the fifth consecutive year, with donations into CAF reaching a record £611 million, the report shows.

CAF manages donations on behalf of wealthy philanthropists, 2,500 businesses and more than 250,000 people.

Many donations are paid out right away to tens of thousands of good causes, while some use their CAF accounts to grow philanthropic funds over time.

Chief executive Sir John Low (pictured) said: “We are overwhelmed by the level of generosity among the people and businesses who work through CAF to support the causes they care about.

“Despite economic uncertainty, we have been able to help our donors give well over £500m to charities, amazing resources that will strengthen communities and transform lives all over the world.

“And we are delighted that so many philanthropists trust CAF to steward and grow their major donations so they can continue giving strategically long into the future.

“As a charity that exists to support civil society, we are proud to be able to grow our services for colleagues across the sector, both here in the UK and around the world.”

Last year CAF brought together a record 1,600 charities and businesses to take part in its global day of giving.

Just to encourage anyone reading this article to go onto the CAF website and see how easy it is to use it for charitable giving. In brief, set up a standing order, CAF reclaim the tax from the Exchequer, and then you can donate either electronically or via paper 'cheques' or a 'debit' card or set up a standing order to your favourite charities. An excellent way of keeping tabs of all your charitable support, and very cost effective too!
