Islanders turn to foodbank as local economy plummets

Shetland’s only foodbank has seen a steep increase in demand as islanders face a downturn in the local economy.

The Lerwick branch saw demand increase a massive 40% on the same time last year.

It comes amid job losses stemming from a downturn in the oil industry – the island’s biggest employer.

Around one quarter of those receiving help from the foodbank were children.

Run by the Trussell Trust, the outlet received nearly 7,000kg of donations over the last six months, with 80% collected at the Tesco supermarket.

The value of the donations was almost £12,000.

"This money will however need to be used in the coming months to purchase additional food stocks as these will be required to be able to support the growing demand on our service," a spokesman for the foodbank said.

Shetland Foodbank, located on St Magnus Street, currently needs tinned vegetables, tinned or instant custard and toiletries such as deodorant, shower gel and toothpaste with all donations gratefully received.
