Scots among those listed as missing by Red Cross

A list of six Scots missing in Nepal after an earthquake devastated the country on Saturday has been released by the International Committee of the Red Cross.

It lists Brian Allen, 41, from Edinburgh, Seobhan McGuigan, 41, from Edinburgh, Lynda Davis, 50, from Perth, Richard Jones, 59, from Glasgow, Susan McDonald, 41, from Dundee, and Mitchell Carpenter, 23, from Aberdeen, as missing.

The families of several others who were on the list have since said they have been in contact with their loved ones and that they are safe.

So far the quake has claimed the lives of over 3,600 people.

Many Scots, especially young people, travel to Nepal to trek, climb mountains or take part in gap year programmes.

Many others volunteer with international charities and NGOs in the region.

Leading aid charities have responded to the disaster by setting up emergency response units.

Oxfam, Christian Aid, Save the Children, the British Red Cross and Plan International UK have all confirmed they are assessing the humanitarian need in the disaster struck area.
