Retailer shuns Black Friday and makes charity donation instead

Fashion store Fat Face refuses to discount and instead says it will donate a quarter of a million to be shared by around 200 local charities

Fashion retailer Fat Face is shunning Black Friday this year and instead donating up to £250,000 to local charities across the UK.

In Scotland the charities Aberdeen Greenspace, Edinburgh Sick Kids, Lochaber Mountain Rescue, Erskine, Sense Scotland, The Highland Hospice, Jak Trueman Foundation have all been chosen to receive a share of 10% of the company’s profits from today until Monday.

The company’s decision not to participate in Black Friday and slash prices follows growing criticism of the shopping event, which last year ended up with police being called to some large supermarkets after fights broke out in the aisles.

Fat Face is calling the weekend its Thanks for Giving initiative and has allowed all its 221 stores and head office to choose a charity local to them to benefit.

A statement on the retailer’s website says instead of discounting its donating. It adds: “The ‘Thanks for Giving’ initiative will take place between Thursday 26 and Monday 30 November across all FatFace stores and at fatface.com.

“The 10% profit donation will be capped at £250,000 and divided equally between all of the chosen charities. Additional fundraising activities will also be taking place in our stores and head office to supplement the donations.”

Fat Face has stores in Livingston, Inverness, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Fort William.
