Being a living wage employer fits with SCIAF’s values and its vision of a just world says director Alistair Dutton

The Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (Sciaf) has become the latest third sector organisation to be accredited as a living wage employer.

Everyone working for the charity, regardless of if they are a permanent employee or third-party contractor, will now receive a minimum hourly wage of £7.85.

Alistair Dutton, director of SCIAF, said: “We are grateful to our recognised union, Unison, for supporting our decision to seek accreditation; Unison has been campaigning for a living wage for many years.

“Being a living wage employer fits with SCIAF’s values and our vision of a just world.

“We are proud of our commitment and pleased that a number of Catholic-inspired charities have come together to make similar commitments this week.”

Sciaf’s announcement follows on from The Poverty Alliance, which operates the Scottish Living Wage Accreditation Initiative, announcing it has set a target of having 500 employers paying the living wage by March 2016.

Peter Kelly, director of the Poverty Alliance, said: “There has been much interest from different sectors across Scotland, and more and more employers are realising that paying the living wage is the right thing to do.

“The employers that we have been working with know that it is the right thing to do for their staff, businesses and the wider community.”
