Anti-sectarianism in Scotland gets a boost

Anti-sectarian campaigners are celebrating after securing backing from a leading Glasgow based business group.

Nil By Mouth (NBM) has been selected by members of Scottish Women in Business (Swib) as its charity of the year for 2015.

A 12 month partnership will see Swib host a series of events and fundraisers as well as providing professional advice and support to the group. The money raised will help fund NBM’s Champions for Change school programme.

The announcement was made at a special event at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome where representatives from NBM and Swib were joined by pupils from St Blanes Primary School, Blantyre.

Swib’s support will help fund our award winning schools programme and encourage young people to understand, rather than fear, difference

The school was presented with its Gold Award by NBM founder Cara Henderson and SWIB vice president Liz Taylor in recognition of its outstanding work challenging sectarianism.

Dave Scott (above), NBM's campaign director, said: 'We are thrilled that swib members chose us at their charity of the year. It's a great start to 2015 which sees Nil by Mouth mark 15 years of challenging bigotry and working to bring people together.

"Swib’s support will help fund our award winning schools programme and encourage young people to understand, rather than fear, difference. As the pupils from St Blanes prove this will be the generation which defeats sectarianism once and for all."

Swib is a Glasgow based non profit membership and networking group for business women. With over 120 members, the group has been established for 23 years and organises monthly networking events with high profile speakers.

Liz Taylor, Swib vice president, said: “Each year our members nominate a charity that they feel is relevant and will benefit from our support. We are delighted to support NBM this year and in partnership with them we hope to improve awareness of the anti-sectarian projects they are involved in. It is wonderful to have this opportunity to launch our partnership on the occasion of the gold award being presented to St Blanes.”
