Sport Relief opens doors to gamers

Video, board and card game players can take part in this year’s fundraiser.

Gamers of all varieties are being urged to come together and support Sport Relief this March.

For the first time, the fundraising event is offering gamers the opportunity to raise money for charities through their hobby, whether they play videogames, boardgames or cards.

Players can use dedicated tools to easily set up a fundraising page, decide if they want to be part of a team or fly solo, pick their favourite gaming activity and set their donation target.

Suggested activities include gaming-themed bake sales, cosplay competitions or pay-to-play boardgame tournaments.

Participants in the Game Raising campaign can also live stream gaming marathons using their preferred platform including Twitch, YouTube, Facebook Live and Mixer.

Those unable to raise money themselves can still support Sport Relief by watching one of their favourite streamers take on a live challenge and donate using a button provided on the website.

All funds will help tackle key issues such as homelessness, domestic abuse, mental health stigma, and child poverty, both in the UK and around the world.

Liz Hadley, head of new ventures at Comic Relief, said: “We’re really excited about this new initiative for Sport Relief.

“Our Game Raising campaign is our first step in offering a new way to fundraise for the Charity, whether that’s e-sports, board gaming, card games or whichever way you play. We can’t wait to see everyone raise their game to support Sport Relief.”

This year’s Sport Relief takes place on Friday 13 March.
