This year’s event is set to be the most sustainable yet.

A trio of well-known Scots have donned Christmas jumpers to raise money for Save the Children.

Tennis coach Judy Murray, author Ian Rankin and chef Tom Kitchin all pulled on their best festive gear to urge people to dig deep for the charity this Christmas.

Now in its eighth year, Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day has raised £21 million to help the charity support children in Scotland, the UK and around the world.

This year’s event takes place on Friday, and the charity is urging the five million people taking part to make it the most sustainable yet.

Participants are asked to upcycle old jumpers wherever possible, while schools are encouraged to hold jumper swaps and donate old jumpers through a recycling bag scheme.

Save the Children are also one of ASOS Marketplace’s official charity boutique partners, selling a selection of vintage Christmas jumpers on the fashion website ahead of the big day.

It comes as research by environmental charity Hubbubfound that 95% of Christmas jumpers sold on the high street and online were made wholly or partly of plastic materials.

Beverley Kirk, Save the Children’s media and communications manager, said: “It’s wonderful to see so many people across Scotland preparing to dig out their silliest sweaters to support vulnerable children in Scotland and around the world. Christmas Jumper day is Save the Children’s biggest single fundraising event, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who is planning to support our cause and the children we work with.

“Personally I love the home made efforts that children create and I know we’ll be seeing some real treats over the next few days.

“If you’ve already registered to take part, or are planning to, then we send out most heartfelt and festive thanks – we hope you have great fun”.
