The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) has been named as a Carer Positive employer

The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) has been recognised for its commitment to supporting staff with caring responsibilities.

The organisation has gained the Carer Positive award, which is presented to employers in Scotland who have a working environment where carers are valued and supported. Carer Positive employers recognise the importance of retaining experienced members of staff, reducing absence, and cutting down on avoidable recruitment costs.

Supporting carers to manage the sometimes difficult job of balancing work with caring responsibilities can deliver real benefits to employers as well as helping individuals and their families. Unfortunately, many carers give up work because the job of juggling their work and caring responsibilities simply becomes too much.

SCVO chief executive Anna Fowlie said: “We are committed to supporting our employees in any we can.

“Being a Carer Positive employer is a vital ingredient in attracting and retaining the best people to work in the third sector, and we want to ensure we offer a supportive environment for our staff no matter what their caring responsibilities are.”

The Carer Positive scheme is administered by Carers Scotland on behalf of Scottish Government. Over 150 organisations of all sizes and from a range of sectors across Scotland are now recognised as Carer Positive employers.

Simon Hodgson, director of Carers Scotland, said: “We are delighted to recognise the efforts made by SCVO in supporting its staff with caring responsibilities. The organisation joins a growing number of employers across Scotland who value the important contribution that carers make, not just in society, but in the workplace.

“SCVO has demonstrated genuine commitment to developing this culture and we hope their example is followed by many other organisations across the voluntary sector.”
