Remploy staff do their bit

A foodbank, which is stopping thousands of local people from going hungry, received a welcome boost when a team of volunteers from Remploy spent a day helping out at a distribution centre in Dundee.

The seven-strong team from Remploy’s branch in Nethergate, Dundee rolled up their sleeves and got to work at the Dundee Foodbank, sorting food and making sure it was in date.

Volunteers took part through Remploy’s Be the Change scheme, which encourages employees to go out into the community to support charities and other organisations.

Louise Craig, Remploy’s Dundee branch manager said: “We worked our way through more than one hundred food containers, each one holding up to 30 products.

“We organised ourselves into two production lines, sorting items into product types and preparing them for despatch. It was hard work and very different from our day job, but it was immensely satisfying.”

Dave Morris, manager of the Dundee Foodbank, which distributes about four tonnes of non-perishable food across six sites every week, said: “It was great to receive help from such a willing band of hardworking volunteers. Without this type of community support it would be impossible for us to reach the people who are in such urgent need of our service.”

Remploy has a nationwide network of more than 60 branches, which last year found jobs for more than 18,500 disabled and disadvantaged people.
