​New support package announced by the Scottish Government

Young carers are to be given more support from the Scottish Government to the tune of £300 a year.

The cash will be made available under a new support package.

In addition, 16-18 year olds who do not qualify for carer’s allowance but spend at least 16 hours a week caring for someone can apply for free bus travel under the new support.

This latest package is in addition to a planned increase in carer’s allowance and other support contained in the 2016 Carers Act.

The act, which will come into effect in April, will place a duty on councils to identify and support young carers.

Sturgeon said: “Young carers make an invaluable contribution to society. The additional grant and free bus travel, along with new legislation and our ambitious changes to the social security system, will help ensure they are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.”

Meg Wright, Director of Carers Trust Scotland said: “We are delighted that the Scottish Government recognises the important contribution that young carers make across Scotland. Many young carers have difficulty participating in the normal activities their peers can enjoy.

“The Young Carer Grant will help young carers to pursue more of their aspirations and reduce social isolation through having the means to travel more widely.”

Citizens Advice Scotland (CAS) welcomed the move but questioned called for the Scottish Government to extend the young carer grant to carers under the age of 16.

Spokesman Rob Gowans said: “As part of the development of a Scottish carer’s allowance, CAS would encourage the Scottish Government to equalise access to carer’s allowance by removing the current restrictions on carers in full-time education receiving the benefit. No young carer should have to choose between caring for their loved one and pursuing their education because of financial considerations.”

There are currently 49,000 young carers in Scotland.
